2025 Golf R Black Edition Engine & Performance Specs

The Golf R Black shares a powertrain with the standard Golf R, equipped with a turbo two 2L four and standard AWD. The manual transmission bows out this year, replaced by the standard automatic transmission. The powertrain is the most powerful yet on a Golf, getting 328 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. The engine gets you from 0-60 in about 4.6 seconds and has a top speed of 167 MPH. The Golf R Black adds additional drive modes for racers, including a Special mode and a Drift mode. Adding optional 19-inch Warmenau wheels makes your wheels 20% lighter, while the agile chassis works with standard DCC adaptive chassis control to ensure handling has never been smoother.

The Biggest differentiator between the standard and Black Edition is the exterior. Living up to its name, the Black Edition only comes in black and features blacked-out wheels, darker VW badges, R logos, and black tailpipe trims. The cosmetic differences are capped off by the standard IQ.LIGHT matrix headlights provide a high-performance main beam with 15% more range. The interior is also blacked out, with premium sports seats and available black Nappa leather. The interior is also littered with limited R branding throughout the cabin. Thanks to the hatchback design, you’ll have 19.9 cubic feet of space in the trunk. 

Updated Tech & Safety Features

Drivers of the Golf R Black can take advantage of the GPS lap timer and G-meter for precise tracking and performance data, allowing you to fine-tune your driving on the track. The infotainment system also gets an overhaul in 2025 for all Golf R models, sporting a free-standing touchscreen with 12.9 inches of real estate. The more streamlined software allows connecting to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
